Community Partnerships

Building healthier communities comes from creating stronger, more positive relationships that cross racial, economic, geographic, and ideological lines. Through partnerships with nearly 100 civic groups, congregations, schools, local governments, county coalitions, businesses and private foundations throughout Montgomery County, Suburban Hospital's outreach programs annually reach hundreds of thousands of local residents.

Access to Care

One way that Suburban Hospital demonstrates its commitment to the community and its health by reaching populations that otherwise might not receive healthcare services. For example, our partnership with the Montgomery County Cancer Crusade focuses on identifying individuals that may be at high risk for colorectal cancer and connecting them to available screening programs. In addition, Suburban Hospital has long provided free diagnostic, outpatient, and inpatient health services to Mobile Medical Care, a local clinic that provides free to low-cost medical care for the uninsured. Moreover, Suburban provides these same free services and more to additional community clinics throughout Maryland.

Business and Education Partnerships

As an active participant in Montgomery County’s Partners in Business and Education initiative, Suburban Hospital staff have an opportunity to provide mentoring services to disadvantaged or at-risk youth in local elementary schools. Established  25 years ago as collaboration between Montgomery County Public Schools and the Chamber of Commerce, this successful program strives to achieve a common goal of workforce readiness for students, while simultaneously establishing a rich and fulfilling relationship between the hospital and the school community.

Suburban currently maintains strong, mutually beneficial relationships with four elementary schools and three middle schools, offering tutoring services, career days, adopt-a-family programs, holiday activities, Safe Sitter classes, and other special events.

Scotland Community

Perhaps the most dramatic example of partnership is the hospital's longstanding relationship with Scotland Community Health Partnership. Established in 1993, the Scotland Partnership addresses unmet healthcare needs and focuses on improving the quality of life for more than one hundred families living in a community enclave in Potomac, Maryland. Today, with Scotland residents facing changing social and economic pressures, Suburban Hospital continues its strong involvement, working collaboratively with neighborhood leaders to address the needs of new generations and continue incremental steps of healthy progress.

Community Health Improvement Expansion

Caring for the community is the mission of Suburban Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness Department. Whether it’s partnering with the area schools, conducting health screenings for the area’s underserved population, or providing seniors with a safe environment in which to better their health.

Since the opening of the NIH Heart Center at Suburban Hospital, Suburban Hospital’s community health an wellness programs have been able to extend beyond the hospital’s range of inpatient services, reaching into Southern Maryland and including vulnerable populations of Prince George's, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's counties. Suburban has made exceptional progress in establishing cardiac disease prevention and early detection in these areas by generating new partners and programs. Some of our partnerships include local hospitals and clinics, community coalitions, community centers, faith based organizations, school-based programs, and county health departments.
