HeartWell Clinics

HeartWell is a nationally recognized program helping senior citizens maintain their health and independence. Appropriate for adults ages 55 and over who have a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other chronic illnesses. Through this approach, participants discover how to reduce the frequency of hospitalizations while maintaining a high level of independent functioning. The HeartWell Clinics focus on preventive guidelines, symptom recognition and management, medication, diet, and lifestyle enhancements, as well as providing nursing consultations from Suburban Hospital RN’s on blood pressure monitoring and individual health education. Walk your way to good health with our free, ongoing indoor walking programs. Start feeling the healthful rewards of dedicated fitness by walking today! Participants receive free blood pressure screening and health information provided by Suburban Hospital.

Senior Shape

Suburban Hospital’s Senior Shape program consists of strength, flexibility, and aerobic exercise training classes. The classes are designed to improve the overall health of seniors residing in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County. Technology: Computers, digital photography, advanced usage and shopping on the internet.

Health Promotion

Through a partnership with Suburban Hospital, OASIS offers enlightening programs that help you lead a healthly, active lifestyle. Choose from classes on exercise, nutrition, safety, and health maintenance. Other examples include:

  • Lectures from physicians and health care professionals from Suburban Hospital; and

  • Fitness courses, such as bone building, strength, stretch and balance and yoga.

Rewarding Volunteer Opportunities

Mature adults have a lifetime of experiences and talents to share. At OASIS, you’ll find meaningful opportunities to serve the community and training to help you succeed. Opportunities are available to help manage the educational center, teach classes, and tutor elementary school students.

Diabetes Education

Sibley Memorial Hospital offers a comprehensive Outpatient Diabetes Program which provides:

  • Individual counseling
  • Many successful strategies for bringing blood sugars under control
  • Instruction for blood glucose monitoring and documentation
  • Diet/meal planning
  • Insulin/diabetes medication instruction
  • Group classes held monthly (Two consecutive days with a 3-hour session each day)
  • Weekly program for women with gestational diabetes
