Our Employees' Outstanding Accomplishments

One of the wonderful things about working at Suburban Hospital is that you are surrounded by individuals who are leaders in their respective fields. Here are just a few highlights of the accolades, publications, and awards our team has recently received.

Accolades

Suburban Hospital has been designated a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare CancersSM  by CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield.

In the April 2009 Washingtonian, Suburban Hospital’s Emergency & Trauma Center earned top marks for treating stroke, heart attack, and other emergencies from the Washingtonian’s Top Doctors. The magazine surveyed nearly 500 physicians about area emergency rooms. Suburban Hospital received the highest percentage for any Maryland hospital, in all categories.

Suburban Hospital Emergency Services was named among the region’s best in the Summer/Fall 2008 issue of Washington Consumer’s Checkbook magazine.

 “Organizational growth, innovation, and community service” contributed to Suburban Hospital earning 9th place out of 100 Maryland organizations that sought to be acknowledged in the Gazette of Politics and Business “Exceptional 53” competition.

In January 2009, Fox 5 reported that Suburban Hospital was named by Healthgrades as one of the top hospitals in the greater Washington, DC region.

Suburban Hospital received top ratings among acute care hospitals across the state in the areas of job satisfaction, loyalty, and willingness to recommend the facility to other nurses. The semi-annual survey sponsored by the Maryland Hospital Association is designed to provide performance benchmarks to gauge nurses’ attitudes and to identify populations at high-risk for turnover and vacancies.

 

Staff Accomplishments

Gloria Martin, RN, program director for the inpatient behavioral health unit, was selected to participate in the first-ever Maryland Mental Health First Aid instructor class.

 

Palma Berardi, RN, MSN, medication safety officer/specialist in the Pharmacy, was selected to serve as one of six nurses on a national research case study to estimate the incidence of adverse events among hospitalized Medicare recipients.

Charlotte Savarino, RN, BSN, CPEN, became one of the first nationwide to receive certification as a pediatric emergency nurse.

 

Awards

Our Cardiothoracic Unit staff won the ADVANCE for Nurses magazine’s “Best Nursing Team Award” for 2008.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources, and Services Administration awarded Suburban Hospital the Organ Donation Medal of Honor in October 2008.

Anna Stokes, RN, MSN, Program Manager, Community Home Care Management was a finalist in Nursing Spectrum’s Nursing Excellence Awards in June 2009 under the category of Community Service.

Carol Stephens, RN, BSN, ONC, Director, Ortho/Neuro/Trauma Unit was a finalist in Nursing Spectrum’s Nursing Excellence Awards in  June 2009 under the category of Management.
