Shaw Family Pediatric Emergency Center at Suburban Hospital

Specialized Care for Our Youngest Patients

Pediatrician David Reitman, M.D., former director of the Shaw Family Pediatric Emergency Center at Suburban Hospital, talks about what every parent should know about kids and emergencies.

The Shaw Family Pediatric Emergency Center at Suburban Hospital provides children of all ages with quality care in a kid-friendly, family-centered environment. From emergency treatment to inpatient admissions, the Pediatric Emergency Center recognizes the unique medical needs of our youngest patients in an atmosphere specifically designed to reduce their anxiety about hospitals. A team of board-certified pediatricians and specially trained pediatric nurses staff the combined emergency/inpatient unit ensure around-the-clock pediatric expertise.

Our clinical staff has many years of experience in treating pediatric emergencies such as asthma attacks, allergic reactions, broken bones and head injuries, as well as routine complaints such as strep throat, flu and conjunctivitis (pink eye). In addition to these medical services, the Pediatric Emergency Center provides emergency evaluations for children and adolescents in crisis.

The combined emergency room/inpatient format helps ease the transition from emergency services to an inpatient bed, providing a more comfortable experience for those children who require a hospital admission. The Pediatric Emergency Center recognizes the special needs of all its pediatric patients and offers a full range of ancillary care, including radiology and laboratory services. The Center also offers support for children who are undergoing outpatient procedures.

Our state-of-the-art facility, dedicated to kids, is designed to lessen the fears that children may experience in an adult health care environment. We are open 24 hours a day, every day. The Center features three rooms for emergency patients, four inpatient beds, and a separate family waiting/play area. Bright murals and stuffed animals help make the Center a cheerful, comforting place.
