Bethesda, Md. (December 14, 2011) Participating with other Maryland hospitals, Suburban Hospital in Bethesda  took first and second place in the first round of an incentive program aimed at reducing the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infections nationwide to less than one infection per 1,000 catheter days. The initiative, called On the Cusp: Stop BSI, is a program developed by Johns Hopkins patient safety expert Peter Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., and supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ).

Every year in the United States, an estimated 30,000 to 62,000 people die due to catheter-related bloodstream infections. With an increasing emphasis in health care on patient safety and quality, hospitals are seeking ways to reduce these avoidable hospital-acquired infections.

“Our team has focused on insertion, maintenance and timely removal of central lines,” said Kimberley Kelly, R.N., director of the Intensive Care Unit at Suburban Hospital. “It has been  18 months since our last central line infection in the ICU. But more importantly, as a group of participating units in the state of Maryland, we have reduced the number of infections, year-to-date from the start of the initiative, by close to 40 percent.” Kelly noted that the team is committed to continuing to reduce the rate of bloodstream, in critically ill patients.

The top 10 units participating from more than 78 Maryland hospitals were recognized based on their level of participation, contributions to the initiative and central line infection statistics. Suburban Hospital will continue to be an active participant in this life-saving initiative through November 2012.
